Which Game Are You Attempting to Master...Trivial Pursuit, or the Game of LIFE?

(Do you remember playing those really cool board games Trivial Pursuit® and Life® from your younger days?)

The other day I was reading the following quote, and it really got me thinking about Time.

“In the absence of clearly defined goals, we become strangely loyal to performing daily trivia…until ultimately we become enslaved to it” – Robert Heinlein

Some time ago, I began to analyze where I was investing my time each day.  And what I discovered is that I was more often spending time, rather than investing it.

Sound familiar?

With the never-ending onslaught of connectivity that we enjoy these days (Twitter, YouTube, Facebook), it’s easier than ever to fritter away hours upon hours of time!

And once those hours are gone, they’re gone.  You can’t get ‘em back, no matter how hard you try.  Unfortunately, there is no “rewind button” on your life.

Of course you KNOW this to be true, but do you really GET IT?

It’s common knowledge that we all have a finite amount of time in our physical existence on this earth, yet we rarely consider the consequences of the choices we are making with our time…

Particularly the choice between Trivial Pursuit, and Life.

The truth is that in order to live the lifestyle you want, you MUST have clearly defined goals.  You MUST have a compelling purpose for pursuing those goals, and you MUST be willing and committed to allocating your time and energy toward the achievement of those goals.

It’s got to mean something to you.

Without purpose, it’s too easy to spend your rapidly-disappearing-allotment of time on trivial, meaningless “stuff” – instead of investing your time living the life of your dreams.

Here are 3 simple actions that you can begin implementing TODAY to get your Life back and keep yourself ON TRACK!

1)  Calendar your daily “social media” time. – For me, it’s six brief intervals daily, lasting 10 minutes each, maximum.  (6am, 9am, Noon, 3pm, 6pm, 9pm)  This equals only one hour a day of Trivial Pursuit, still leaving 8 full hours of Life.

(What?  Your 8 hours are being spent at “work”, not enjoying life?  That’s a topic for another time!)

2)  Ask Yourself the Perfect Question. – Each day, when you’re faced with options for where to invest your time, ask yourself the following question; “Will taking this action move me closer to my [clearly defined] goal?

Yes? – SWEET!  Do it now!

No? – Why spend another precious minute of your valuable time on it?  Find something better and more purposeful to do.

3)  Commit 30 minutes daily to defining (or refining) your goals. – Whether they are “small” goals or BHAG’s (Big Hairy Audacious Goals) really doesn’t matter.

Carve out this time daily to work toward their achievement.

And soon, you’ll be winning in the game of Life!

Just How STRONG Is YOUR "Success Culture"?

Recently, I was reading an overview of a corporate leadership study on organizational strength and where that strength comes from (yawn, I know!) and I was quite surprised at some of the findings…

But even MORE compelling than the study’s findings, (completed by renowned corporate-culture experts Price Pritchett) was just how important the strengths that they identified as mandatory for success are to you and me, as individuals.  

Maybe there is something cool that we can learn from corporate USA?

Now, most would think that corporate leaders would identify things like market-share, cash-flow, return-on-investment, earnings-per-share, and other financial data as the most important indicators of their strength, right?

As it turns out, the study uncovered something COMPLETELY DIFFERENT!

When asked to identify the most important strengths for success, they came up with these TEN attributes. (in no particular order)

Resilience - (The ability to take problems in stride, to bounce back quickly from difficulties or defeat; change-adaptive)

Confidence - (Organizational self-assurance; belief in the organization’s ability to perform effectively)

Energy Level - (The “corporate metabolism;” vitality; the capacity to do work)

 

Creativity and Innovation - (Coming up with viable new ideas; implementing fresh approaches)

 

Can-do Attitude - (A success-minded bias to “go for it” and make things happen)

Ambition - (Aspiration level or drive to achieve)

Hope - (Faith in the future; favorable outlook regarding things to come)

Happiness - (Positive, upbeat mental state; sense of well-being)

Competitive Spirit - (Playing to win; determination to outdo the opposition; pushing to improve)

Staying Power - (Emotional stamina; the psychological strength to persevere)

These attributes seem fairly straightforward, yet the study also uncovered an interesting conundrum...

While they ALL ranked "Creativity and Innovation" amongst their top three attributes that count the most, when they measured the current state of their company’s against this list, they found that creativity and innovation ranked LOWEST of all!

Hmmmm…  Wonder why? 

Well, I have a few ideas...

First of all, I believe that in our roles, jobs, and daily lives, we're consistently neglecting our creative faculties.  We get into routines.  We tend to spend far too much time focusing on the problems in our lives, as opposed to seeking and creating solutions.

And it's no coincidence that our corporate culture feels the effect of this lack of imagination and innovation...

After all it is people that work for, and run these companies, right?

Collectively, we’ve stopped constructively using our imaginations, and subsequently we're missing out on what's really most important.  We've all got so much "noise" going on around us that we often fail to recognize the hints and hunches that our creative mind is trying to tell us about.

We also rely far too heavily on our external senses and what's going on "out there", instead of actively and creatively developing our imagination to empower ourselves and those around us.

But here's the good news!

Your creative faculties still exist.  They may be dormant in your mind today, but with a new awareness, practice, and repetition, you can develop your mental ability to innovate and imagine great things.

And I can assure you that if you were to focus your attention and energies on improving yourself in the 10 areas identified above, you'd experience transformational growth and results far greater than you could ever imagine!

7 Ways to Have Faith! (Even When It Seems Like There Is No Tangible Result From Your Efforts)

One of my favorite definitions of Faith is, "Belief...without proof".

It makes me wonder, where along the line did we decide that in order to believe something, we must have proof?  I suppose that we've been conditioned to demand proof, because either someone or something has violated our trust in the past...and we continue to carry that memory into our present experiences, often to our detriment.

My intention for you today, is that you awaken your Faith in all things positive.  And I'd like to share some thoughts with you on how to accomplish this.

1)  Tune out negativity - Negative people, negative programming (television), and negative information of any sort only inhibits your ability to have faith.  Sometimes we can't avoid negativity, but we certainly can choose not to wallow in it.  Disengage from negativity whenever given the opportunity.

2)  Flood your mind with positive thoughts and images - I firmly believe that what we focus on, expands.  (For good or for bad).  You have ultimate control over your thoughts and how you choose to see things.  Focus on what you want.  Be the interpreter, not the interpretation.  How much time did you spend today thinking about who you want to become, and what you want to achieve?

3)  Remember that ALL progress begins with that elusive first step - As long as you are pointed in the right direction, steps that seem minuscule in the moment will still lead you toward your objective.  Most people tend to over-estimate what they can accomplish in a short period of time, and under-estimate what they can accomplish over a long period of time.  Be patient in the knowledge that even a small step forward is still moving you forward.

4)  Don't give up too soon - The majority of people give up far too soon, at the slightest sign of adversity.  Often, they were just inches short of accomplishing something great.  This approach is not for you.  Persistence and commitment, by law, will produce positive results.

5)  Link absolute certainty to your objective- Remember that our subconscious mind cannot distinguish the difference between events in reality and those occurring in our imagination.  Recall something that you firmly believe as fact, and replicate that feeling of certainty while envisioning that which you aim to accomplish.  This is known as applied faith, and is a little-know secret to fulfilling your desires.

6)  Be like a tree - In the early stages, most growth is occurring below the surface, invisible to the naked eye.  Rest assured that your applied faith and inspired action steps are causing the growth of some powerful and far-reaching roots.  And it is those roots that will support you as you break through the surface, growing tall and mighty!

7)  Remember that Faith is a state-of-mind - Subsequently, faith is totally under your control.  No outside force can overtake your thoughts, unless you grant permission to do so.  Knowing this, you can develop faith through the continuous repetition of thought.  And when the object of your faith becomes the dominant thought in your mind, it's physical equivalent will instantly materialize in your life.

In the immortal words of Dr. Napoleon Hill, "Faith is the eternal elixir which gives life, power, and action to the impulse of thought".

Have faith in yourself, and have faith in the Infinite.

Trust - How To Create and Sustain Trust In Your Business and Personal Relationships

The dictionary defines trust as;  the reliance on the integrity, strength, ability, surety, etc.,of a person or thing, confidence.

Wow!  Let's break that down...

Wouldn't YOU like to be known as being reliable, having integrity and strength, combined with ability and surety?  Those are all excellent, positive character traits that you would be well advised to adopt and incorporate into your daily experience.

We each have our own individual and unique definition of trust.  One's trust level in others will be shaped by both their past experiences and their future expectations.

I define trust as the positive expectation that the person I am entrusting will do the right thing (without being told to do it) and not just because I WANT them to, but because in their heart they know it it the RIGHT thing to do.

In this article, I will share some ideas on how you can become more trusted and trustworthy, and it all starts by giving trust.

You've heard before that if you want more love, give more love.  If you want more happiness, help others to find happiness.  The same approach to trust will help you create and sustain trust in your business and personal relationships.

Here are some more ideas to help you to be more trustworthy, starting today -

1)  Be likable.  A pleasing personality creates a foundation for building trust.  Treat others as you would like to be treated, and do it with sincerity and a smile!

2)  Be interested.  Displaying genuine interest IN others makes you more interesting TO others.  And reciprocal interest is a key ingredient for sustainable trust.

3)  Keep your commitments, no matter how small or insignificant they may seem at the time.  Be consciously aware of your words and what you commit to doing - AND THEN DO IT!

4)  Be honest.  When you tell the truth (even when the truth hurts) you position yourself as credible and trustworthy.  And if you will practice telling the truth FASTER, others will appreciate your integrity and be more willing to share their feelings and desires with you.

5)  Be compassionate and empathetic.  When you seek to understand PRIOR to seeking to be understood, you open a channel of communication that allows trust to easily flow back-and-forth.

6)  Be fair and consistent.  When others understand and realize that you care and that they can count on you for predictable, reliable, positive behavior...everytime, you will be viewed as one to be trusted.

7)  Be accountable.  Hold yourself to a higher standard than anyone might even expect from you.  When you follow through at this level, trust develops naturally and effortlessly.

You can increase the likelihood of positive future outcomes by visualizing and expecting the best from others, and by being your best.

Your personal character is a perpetual work-in-progress.  Practice being trustworthy, and when faced with ANY decision...DO THE RIGHT THING!

Your Net-Work Affects Your Net-Worth! How to Identify and Connect With The Right People to Help You Upgrade Your Network!

The legendary personal development guru Jim Rohn coined the phrase, "You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with"...

Yikes!  Now let me think about that for a minute...  Who are the 5 people that I'm spending most of MY time with?

When YOU think about your current network of friends and co-workers, who among them is supporting your personal development and growth?  Any of them?  None of them?  All of them?

For most of us, there are a least a couple of people in our daily experience that we could easily label as less-than supportive.  (Heck, they might even be living under the same roof!)  And I'm not suggesting that you immediately stop associating with anyone that does not support your personal or spiritual growth...(Or wait...maybe I am?) 

Yet what I am suggesting is that right now it is easier than you may have ever thought possible to improve the quality of your network, and your associations.

But exactly HOW do you "increase your average" and elevate the quality of your network?

Quite simply, by associating with more educated, more intelligent, more talented, and more supportive people.  And by spending more and more of your irreplaceable time interacting with them.

The virtual explosion of social networking has helped to create an exciting new era of transparency - and there is no end in sight. 

Social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. are literally obliterating the gap between YOU and the people and mentors that could help you to upgrade your personal or business networks.

And even more important than the incredible access and transparency that exists today, is the blinding speed with which you can begin the upgrading (or overhauling) of your network!  And the place to start is in your current sphere of influence.

Today, commit to asking the people in your world this question..."Who do YOU know that I need to know?"

Career Change Credibility - Seven Success Skills You Must Adopt and Master!

The world is going through a period of unprecedented uncertainty and transformation. 

In times of transition, you may find yourself at a career crossroads...considering (by choice or by necessity) a new position, job, or career.

It's not uncommon to feel a sense of apprehension or even fear when you begin to think about the potential challenges that may lie ahead of you in your new role.  You might even question yourself about your lack of experience in you new field.  This is totally normal.  The key is to experience those feelings for what they are, and then redirect your focus toward that which you can control...your attitude and your thoughts.

To ensure success going forward, it's good to remember that you always retain the power to be your best, regardless of the title that appears on your door or your business card.  There is only one you, and subsequently your unique talents create a fresh opportunity to shine in your new endeavor.

Around this time every year, it's common to assess where you've been, and where you're going.  If you will resolve to work on the following seven principles throughout the coming year, I am certain that your career change will be extremely rewarding, both financially and for your soul!

Optimism - The world loves an optimist!  Keeping in your mind the belief that brighter days are surely ahead, is the first step in building a solid foundation for success.

Initiative - Regardless of your position in any company, seek out ways to create improvement in your approach, your processes, and your new working relationships.  Be the first to offer a helping hand and be willing to try new things.

Enthusiasm - Here is where you can really set yourself apart from the pack.  Bring an eagerness to your work every day.  View each event as a wonderful new discovery - kind of like how a child feels when he learns a new skill.  That sense of excitement is transferable, and not only do you help yourself to excel, you will also elevate your co-workers in the process.  Everyone benefits when you are enthusiastic.

Integrity - This trait has been described as "doing the right thing, even though no one is watching".  I view integrity as being congruent with your words and deeds.  This means following through on what you say you are going to do, in a spirit of honesty and fairness.  Demonstrate integrity and you will quickly earn the respect of your peers.

Doing More Than You Are Paid To Do - In a challenging economy, you may find yourself accepting a new position where the monetary compensation is far less than your former position or less than you are accustomed to receiving.  DO NOT let this deter you from going the extra mile.  The emotional rewards are immediate, and the spiritual and financial rewards will soon follow.  Become the "go-to" person in your organization and you will find that new opportunities offered to you often.

Imagination - This may perhaps be the most critical skill for you to adopt and master.  No man or woman has ever achieved notable success without imagination.  In your new role, always try to be thinking up new and creative ways to improve your workplace, your products, and your services.  Allow your mind to create new ideas and then diligently find ways to implement them.

Faith - Know in your heart that your world is unfolding exactly as it is supposed to be.  Reflect on the lessons learned in your former role, and believe in your ability to thrive in your new one.  Faith is the belief that you are exactly where you are supposed to be in this very moment.  Know that the Universe "has your back" and that success is your divine right.

If you will incorporate, apply, and practice these principles, it doesn't matter what new field you are entering.  When you own these skills, you can bring them to any job.

Expect more from yourself than anyone could ever expect from you!

How To Persist In The Face Of Adversity

The dictionary defines adversity as "a condition marked by misfortune, calamity, or distress".

You have certainly had experiences in your life that were distressing or unfortunate.

Hey...you're human...

Yet however seemingly painful the adversity might feel in the moment, it does not define who you are.

How you respond to adversity will define who you are.

And the most effective response to adversity is Persistence.  You've likely heard the quote before "in every adversity lies the seed of an equal or greater opportunity".  Keeping this truth in mind is the key.

When you come up against adversity, it can be like standing with your face just inches from a wall.  Your perspective is so limited that you cannot envision a way over it or around it.  But as you put some distance between yourself and the wall, things start to become more clear. 

You begin to see more options as your view improves.

Here are 5 steps that you can take to keep the proper perspective when faced with adversity.

1)  Pause.  See the problem or obstacle for what it really is, and don't make it bigger than it is.
        
2)  Reflect.  Remember that there are few obstacles in life that cannot be overcome by consistent sustained, inspired actions.

3)  Take control.  Forget about those things that you cannot control, and focus your energy on what you can control...your mind and your attitude.

4)  Believe.  Know that every struggle that you face is an opportunity for personal growth.  It is your responsibility to stay the course when you know you are right.  You will prevail!

5)  Persist.  Remember that defeat is never permanent unless you allow it to be.  Choose to be unlike those who decide to give up too soon.  Keep going, with Faith!

Adversity, like failure, is only an event.  It is a useful and necessary teacher, designed to help us to reach our fullest potential.

You are a part of an amazing, abundant Universe that will eventually and always reward your honest efforts.  Stay true to your goals and desires, and your success is guaranteed!

What's The Difference that makes "The Difference"?

Have you heard this statement before?

"At 211 degrees, water is hot...at 212 degrees, it boils'.

That one degree is the difference that makes "the difference".

I don't know about you, but when I think of that seemingly small, incremental difference, it helps me to realize that I have within me, the power to create positive change.  And I believe you do as well.

You certainly have the capacity to increase your efforts by one degree, don't you?

In what areas of your life could you "turn up the heat"?  Where could you add that one degree of extra effort?  On the job?  In your relationships?

The truth is that we are each individually responsible for our own results. 

The results that we are experiencing in this very moment are in direct correlation to the quality and quantity of our previous efforts.  And although that statment can be somewhat sobering, it also contains within it the seed of possibility.  This is because you and I have the unique ability and power to control our thoughts, feelings, and actions.  When we catch ourselves giving less than our best, we can will ourselves into doing and giving more.

Take a few moments to think about the routines that make up your typical day... Most of us tend to fall into familiar daily activities that are rarely an expression of who we are truly capable of being.

Commit right now to adding that extra degree of effort into all that you do.  Go beyond what is expected or required.  Your efforts will pay off in rewards exponentially greater than even those you can imagine.

Fear or Faith - Which One is Influencing Your Future?

Fear and Faith have one undeniable similarity...

Both create an imagined expectation of something occurring in the future.

Fear is negative expectation, while Faith embodies the positive.  And each share an incredible power to shape your destiny.

Often times, we allow the fear of the unknown to immobilize us.  We worry about things that have not yet happened - and likely may never happen.

Imagine that you have a dinner date scheduled for 7:00 PM.  At 7:10, your guest has yet to arrive.  You casually think, "maybe there is some heavy traffic".  You call on your cell phone, and there is no answer.  7:30 rolls around, with no call and they are still not there... Now your mind starts to create stories..."I hope they are okay, or that they didn't get into an accident".

Over the years, we have been conditioned to expect the worse.  The sad part is that this state of negative expectation has found its way into much of our daily life.  When we dwell on these negative thoughts, they can easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy.  This is because we tend to attract that which we focus on.

Fortunately, this power is equally as effective when focusing on positive expectations.

When we expect the best, the best usually shows up!  When we hold our attention on the things that we want, our actions naturally come into alignment with our desires.

This is the basis of Faith.  The quickest antidote for baseless fear is FAITH!

One of my favorite quotes from Napoleon Hill states, "Close the door of fear behind you and see how quickly the door to faith will open in front of you".

When faced with adversity, rely on your faith.  Remember that you are strong and powerful.  Be confident in the knowingness that you are capable of accomplishing anything that you set your mind upon.  Imagine the outcome exactly as you wish it to be.

Abolish fear!  Do not be afraid of what others might think.  Do not be afraid that you do not yet have the talent, experience, or the resources.  These can all be gained along the way to your destiny.

Your success is only limited by the power of your imagination, and with Faith, all things are possible.

Breaking Through Limitations...Yours and Theirs!

On May 5th, 1954, it was impossible to run a mile in under 4 minutes.

"They" said it couldn't be done.  Why? 

Because it had never been done before. 

Or had it?

The next day, on May 6th, 1954, at the Iffley Road track at Oxford University, an amatuer athlete and young medical student, Roger Bannister, was the first person to run a mile in under 4 minutes.  His official time was 3:59:4.  The previous record, set nine long years earlier, was 4:01.3.

So what was the difference that made the difference?

The difference was that Roger Bannister decided that he was going to break the 4 minute barrier. 

He believed it was possible, and he put a plan of action into place to make that possibility a reality.  Through dedication, hard-work, and training, his body became capable of producing what his mind had already conceived.  He visualized himself crossing the finish line in under four minutes.

"They" said it could not be done, but he knew in his heart that it was possible.

And the race was already won in his mind, in advance of his actual performance.

During the race, he knew exactly where he had to be in relation to his time on the track.  After the first lap, at 58 seconds...at the half-mile, 2 minutes.  He was overtaken on the 3rd lap, right on schedule at 3 minutes.  But he sensed that the field was slowing down, and in the final bend, moved into the lead and ran with all he had to the finish...and a new world record!

But here is the strange part...

Not long after his accomplishment, his record was broken.  And then something even more interesting began to happen... Other runners began to run sub-four-minute miles!  And not just occasionally, but frequently.

How could something, so seemingly impossible to accomplish just DAYS before... considered at the time to be an "insurmountable human limitation", have now become, dare I say, commonplace?

Quite simply, it is because prior to May 6th, 1954, the conscious mind of man had accepted conventional wisdom as fact.

And sadly, 25 years later, we are still doing the same thing. 

Too often, we settle for limitations that we have put upon ourselves, or accept the limitations discussed or placed upon us by others.  We rarely reach the levels of achievment that are truly possible for us, because we fail to challenge ourselves to be our best.  Regardless of your current level of success, each of us is capable of far more than our present experience.

So what is your "4 minute mile"?

What is that seemingly insurmountable obstacle or goal that is currently beyond your reach?  What is holding you back from living your dreams and accomplishing your ultimate desires?

Success is your birthright, and you are not only capable, but you are DESERVING of the best that this world has to offer.  You hold within you, pure potential.  Yet until you accept that truth, until you believe in the possibility, your dreams may seem elusive, just as they did for every other runner on Earth in May of 1954.

From this day forward, choose a new belief.  Choose to believe in possibility.  Choose to believe that you are destined to live an abundant, successful, fulfilling life.  Use your amazing imagination to see your dreams as already being fulfilled.

Get clear on your goals, make plans to accomplish them, and get started!  Taking inspired actions toward the attainment of your desires is the critical key.  Believe in yourself...I believe in you!
